Swallows of Kabul Chapter One
They way they went about killing the prostitute in the first chapter was kinda harsh in my oppinion because yea I know she did wrong but I think the humility of being caught doing that and perhaps a lighter punishment would have been enough. That or if that was the punishment that they wanted to go with I believe the people whom she involved in the crime should have been the only ones present at the stoning not the whole city. I do not understand why people who had no involvement in the crime would want to be a part in it. Its not like she did any wrong to them. Stoning as the punishment is not very common around here anymore most people are just sent to jail. Prostitution however is very common and not usually punished that harshly.

Yeah, I agree with what you said about who was present. Why would random people who weren't involved stone her. I would feel guilty for killing someone I didn't even know for reasons I didn't know of.
Islamic law is very different than the law we are used to in the U.S. The Koran calls for stiff penalties for wrong doers. What this scene does is shows the reader that this is a town that doesn't put up with any crap. Right or wrong, that is how Kabul operates under the Taliban rule.
Tell me more about the characters? Mohsen? Atiq? You'll get to know them better in the coming chapters.
Keep the comments coming,
Mr. Farrell
